1. Activity focus and purpose : Enhance faculty understanding of EMI and their skills in teaching it. 2. Activity features and implementation : Professor Tsai Ke-li began by discussing his background and the training he received related to EMI. He asked teachers to reflect on the challenges of teaching courses in Chinese and then transitioned to the difficulties of teaching in English. Since understanding lessons in English is significantly more challenging for students compared to lessons in Chinese, it is essential to provide students with clear learning objectives and values beyond just professional knowledge in order to inspire their motivation to an EMI class. When teaching EMI, educators can adopt a multimodal approach, providing students with various support tools to prevent them from experiencing a steep failure that could undermine their confidence. Professor Tsai also presented actual teaching materials to illustrate that there should be differences between teaching in Chinese and English, rather than simply translating materials from Chinese to English. In the final half hour, the speaker asked teachers to work in groups to design an EMI lesson plan, outlining 18 class methods, activities, and assignments. After designing, they would share their lesson plan content with everyone as an example of a one-hour course. |
